To explore how race, gender, and sexuality are portrayed in various forms of media, students from BIS 162: Intersectionality of Race, Sex, and Gender in Film conducted analyses of diverse short films produced for the Seattle 48-Hour Film Project.

is an international contest where participants are challenged to produce a short film within two days. Teams face various obstacles, from creating a film from nothing and improvising based on randomly assigned tasks, such as genre, character, and dialogue. At the end of the competition, all films are screened at a local theater, and awards are presented in diverse categories, including Best Film and Best Actor. Winning films may advance to compete in international events like the Filmapalooza Festival and could even be screened at prestigious festivals, such as the Cannes Film Festival’s Short Film Corner.

Dana Washington, the Community-Engaged Learning and Research (CELR) Manager, reached out to Kris Flink and Kris Nordenstrom, producers of the Seattle 48-Hour Film Project, seeking an opportunity for BIS 162 students to gain practical experience. The goal of this collaboration was to offer undergraduates hands-on learning in media analysis while deepening their understanding of race, gender, and sexuality in film.

The film “” by Team Rain at Daybreak was selected by students as the recipient of the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell Intersectionality in Film Award. The class praised the film’s memorable script and its thoughtful exploration of critical themes such as dependence and addiction, particularly across racial and gender lines, through a humorous satire of Seattle’s coffee culture. Students also appreciated the film’s nuanced portrayal of how personal and social issues affect individuals differently, depending on demographic variables and social positions.

The Collaboratory teamed up with the to design a topographic map model of the park. Santiago Lopez and Lily Cason from the EERC communicated with the Collaboratory through the whole design process to fabricate a perfect replica of St. Edward State Park.

The topographic map model of St. Edward State Park made by Drake Monfregola, Samantha Brown, and Giuliano Bussadori

The topographic map was designed and constructed by Drake Monfregola, the Laser Cutting lead at the Collaboratory. All he used as a reference for the model was a single PDF of the levels of elevation of the park. With the skills he has in Adobe Illustrator, he designed each layer of the map one by one.

Afterwards, he moved to line up the trails, which posed a bigger challenge than the Collaboratory team initially thought. But after time, the map base was complete. Now all that was needed was to assemble the border and paint the bottom plate. Samantha Brown, a student staff member at the Collaboratory, was tasked with completing the EERC topographic map, leveraging her painting and woodshop skills. With the assistance of Giuliano Bussadori, she carried out the final steps, and the map was successfully finished.

EERC visitors can now visualize and navigate the park’s intricate terrain with this new map.

3D Printed Head

One of our most interesting capstone projects for the Spring 2022 quarter was Simon Uincini’s lifesize talking head! This isn’t just any old plastic head either, it is a head modeled after the creator, Simon himself. After using one of the Collaboratory’s Shining 3D Scanners, Simmon digitized his entire face. And after a few more edits to the digital head, Simon decided to bring his creation to life.

With his design ready, Simmon preloaded his Life Size head model onto one of our most powerful 3D printers, the Ultimaker S5. The print took over six whole days to finish, making it our longest print ever in Collaboratory. After the prints completion, all that needed to be done was add a speaker device and a camera onto the model.

This capstone project was designed to not only take audio input but visual input as well. It can read faces and respond accordingly. All the dialogue spoken by the head is generated using DeepAI, to make all conversations different and unique.

Simon and his efforts to create this Capstone project really shows what happens when you mix dedication and advanced technology. Seeing what this man can do, it’s only a matter of time before we see the amazing creations he will construct for us in the future.

Team Abyssal

Another IMD capstone team, Team Abyssal, used the space regularly to work together, including filming the video portions for their project. They created pieces of their art installation project before they set it up publicly for their final presentations. ABYSSAL is an immersive, multi-sensory art installation that utilizes video projections, sound, and sculptures to create a unique experience of a deep sea habitat to foster curiosity and empathy for ocean ecosystems. .

The Institute is designed to strengthen institutional capacity to achieve quality, equity, and student engagement goals through the design, implementation, and assessment of active teaching and learning practices widely known as “high-impact practices,” or HIPs. The Institute will be held virtually June 14–17.

“The AAC&U Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success provides an unparalleled opportunity for colleges and universities to become more intentional in serving all their students and to improve both completion rates and the quality of student learning,” said AAC&U President Lynn Pasquerella. “We look forward to partnering with the participating institutions and to supporting their student success efforts.”

Each participating institution will send a team to the Institute, where they will work with leading experts and practitioners on efforts to implement educational change and bring effective practices to scale in a time of limited resources and variations in modes of delivery. The Institute program will focus on designing equity-centered HIPs and developing action plans to guide campus-based efforts. Drawing on evidence that demonstrates a positive relationship between student participation in HIPs and improved student outcomes, teams will define and start to develop curricular and co-curricular practices to support student engagement, advance curricular coherence, and generate equitable outcomes. Utilizing as a guiding framework, participating teams will define and strengthen processes for directly assessing student achievement of learning outcomes as a result of participation in HIPs. These processes will help campus and system-level teams set and monitor progress toward equity goals to improve educational outcomes for all students.

“The Institute represents AAC&U’s continued partnership with leading experts on high-impact practices and student success to examine the latest research and to address the most pressing issues related to equity, quality, and assessment to design sustainable efforts that are responsive to students’ needs and values the diversity of students’ identities,” said Tia McNair, Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Student Success and Executive Director for the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation Campus Centers.

The following institutions will participate in the 2022 Institute on High-Impact Practices and Student Success:

Early in Spring Quarter, the Health Educators Reaching Out (HEROs), peer educators, and the Collaboratory staff co-hosted an event called Hands on Healing. The event took place in the newly opened Collaboratory space located on the second floor of the Discovery Hall. The goal of the event was to promote healing, community, and conversation around mental health through hands-on crafts and projects. Each station at the event had prompts that encouraged reflection. Some of these stations include painting on a canvas, stylizing a pennant banner, origami, and magnet customization.

When students painted on the canvases they were prompted to paint something that made them feel peaceful, calm, and safe.

Then when students worked on stylizing a pennant banner, they were prompted to draw something on the pennant that represented what community meant to them. After all the pennants were finished, they were linked together to form a banner.

The origami station was a hands-on activity that was used to promote mindfulness. Students were prompted to write something motivational for themselves on a piece of origami paper, then they were tasked with folding it into one of the suggested origami shapes, like hearts and cute animal faces.

The wood magnets were created in advance by staff in the Collaboratory using the laser cutter. The prompt that the students were given was to paint something that made a major impact in their lives onto the magnet.
