Study abroad trip offers new perspectives on environmental challenges

Dr. Avery Cook Shinneman went on a Study Abroad Program in New Zealand with five 56�Թ�� Bothell students to study the environmental challenges regarding invasive species. They experienced hands-on environment work and listened to Indigenous Māori perspectives on land management, gaining a new understanding to reconsider invasive species issues and environmental policies in Washington state.

Getting the most out of the graduate experience

After years of working as a paraeducator and freelance designer, Breanna Powell returned and embarked on a phenomenal journey at the 56�Թ�� to embrace the opportunities she missed during her undergraduate years. While pursuing a master’s degree in Computer Science & Software Engineering on campus, she participated in the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Club, a Study Abroad program in Germany, and an internship opportunity at the Los Alamos National Laboratory to exercise in-class knowledge and hone her skills with hands-on experiences.

After engaging with local experts to understand land and water policies, exploring the Maori culture, and analyzing genetic material to study ecosystems, the phenomenal experience made him reflect on the importance of having the courage to seize opportunities to expand perspectives.
