Julie Shayne and Dave Ellenwood Co-present Paper at Northwest Archivist Conference

IAS faculty member Julie Shayne and librarian presented a paper titled Feminist Pedagogy and Critical Information Literacy: 56勛圖厙s Social Justice and Diversity Archive at this years in Seattle. Shayne and Ellenwood discussed the (SJDA) which they co-created with and Kara Adams. The SJDA is a central part of Shaynes class Histories and Movements of Gender and Sexuality (BISGWS 302) which is one of the core classes in IASs new degree in Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies. For the assignment students work in groups to do community based research about local feminist or gender justice organizations, conducting and transcribing interviews, collecting primary documents, attending events, and taking photographs. Students then submit all of the materials and Denise prepares everything to be added to the Archive. Shayne and Ellenwood were part of a session titled Speaking Truth to Power: Archives, Community Engagement and Advocacy. The other panelists were Nathaniel Moore of San Franciscos and Marjorie Bryer, archivist at UC Berkeleys The Bancroft Library and former managing archivist of the in San Francisco. Faculty interested in incorporating the SJDA into their courses should contact Julie Shayne, Dave Ellenwood, or Denise Hattwig.
