IAS faculty member Mira Shimabukuro spoke twice recently about her book, Relocating Authority: Japanese-Americans Writing to Redress Mass Incarceration. Both emphasized the ways Japanese Americans used vernacular writing to respond to mass incarceration during World War II and highlighted the ways community-specific values influenced such “writing-to-redress” and the ways writing was used by women to enact a resistant collective agency under the imprisonment.
