Kristin Gustafson publishes “Reporting today, with yesterday’s context”

IAS faculty member Kristin Gustafson, along with co-authors (William Paterson University) and (University of Tennessee), published “” in the (CJR). The article addresses the role of historical reporting and "turning to history for perspective" in covering today's news. CJR is a magazine for journalists and other communication, technology, academic, and media industry professionals.
The article emerged in part from Gustafson's work with Roessner for the , as the History Division's teaching standards co-chairs. In 2019, they set a goal to advocate nationally and internationally for the importance of historically informed students in journalism and mass communication curriculum. This multi-year and multi-faceted endeavor, which builds on efforts happening within and beyond the division, included creating a teaching salon focused on supporting public scholarship that makes the argument.
