56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell Professor Scott Kurashige elected president of American Studies Association

BOTHELL, Washington — 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Professor Scott Kurashige has been elected president of the .

A national associated based in Washington, D.C., the ASA promotes interdisciplinary research on U.S. culture and history. It supports scholars committed to original research, critical thinking and public dialogue.

Kurashige will serve as president-elect for a year starting July 1, followed by one year as president beginning July 1, 2019. The election is a recognition of 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell’s growing reputation, especially its commitment to diversity, interdisciplinary education and socially engaged scholarship, Kurashige said.

The ASA’s trust in Kurashige is well-placed and an honor for 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell, said Chancellor Wolf Yeigh.

Kurashige is faculty in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences. Some classes he has taught include Introduction to Asian-American Studies, and Diversity, Leadership and Engagement. He researches 20th and 21st century American history, urbanism and social movements from the vantage points of black and Asian-American studies. Kurashige is the author of two books, most recently “The Fifty-Year Rebellion: How the U.S. Political Crisis Began in Detroit” (University of California Press, 2017).
