Cruz Garibay wins Fulbright award
56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell graduate Cruz Garibay, who grew up in an immigrant family in Yakima and was the 2015 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Homecoming King, won a 2018 Fulbright grant to Brazil. The fifth 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell recipient of a U.S. student Fulbright award, Garibay will work as an English teaching assistant at a university.

Successful fundraiser for Anna Bui endowment
About 200 people attended a fundraiser in Mukilteo, Washington, that brought in nearly $41,000 for the Anna Bui World of Hope Scholarship at the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø. With previous donations, the endowment fund now has nearly $59,000 to support study abroad experiences for other students in memory of 19-year-old Bui who was killed last summer shortly after traveling in Europe for three weeks.

Alumni weekend’s run and fun
The Husky 5K on the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Alumni Weekend drew 800 runners and raised $17,000 for student scholarships. The Bothell Block Party and Brewfest on the afternoon of May 20 drew 2,500 people to enjoy beer, food and live bands.

All four of Peter and Julie Becker's children have attended the University of Washington campus in their hometown. Over the past decade, brothers Jack, Nick and Joe have graduated from 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell, and this year their sister Molly takes the walk in cap and gown.

Lawyer, philanthropist to receive 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award
Stephen Ssemaala, a political refugee from Uganda who graduated from the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø and the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø School of Law is the recipient of the 2017 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell Distinguished Alumni Award. Ssemaala is honored for distinguished professional achievements and outstanding community service. The award was established in 2000, and the winner is selected by the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell Alumni Council.

Army National Guard Capt. Aaron Thacker said his 56³Ô¹ÏÍø liberal studies degree in 1998 gave him critical thinking skills that have served him in an Army career in public affairs and military policing that included deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Native Girls Code, helping diversify STEM
After completing her community psychology degree with a human rights minor at the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø, Shawn Peterson created a way to combine her education with her passion. She helped start Native Girls Code with the goal of introducing indigenous teen girls to opportunities in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Alumni now may receive one-on-one career counseling from 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Career Services for up to two years after graduation. This valuable service has been expanded from three months to better serve graduates in a changing work world.
