The 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Class of 2017 is the largest to date with nearly 2,000 graduates. About 1,400 of them will walk to “Pomp and Circumstance” and receive their degrees Tuesday, June 13, at Safeco Field.

Lawyer, philanthropist to receive 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award
Stephen Ssemaala, a political refugee from Uganda who graduated from the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø and the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø School of Law is the recipient of the 2017 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell Distinguished Alumni Award. Ssemaala is honored for distinguished professional achievements and outstanding community service. The award was established in 2000, and the winner is selected by the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell Alumni Council.

The announcement that a third collision of black holes has been detected three billion light years away validates the work of hundreds of scientists, including Joey Shapiro Key, assistant professor of physics at the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø. The discovery was made using a detector located at Hanford in eastern Washington.

56³Ô¹ÏÍø commencement speaker is NFL draftee, astronaut Leland Melvin
Leland Melvin was drafted in the National Football League and went on to become an astronaut, but only after overcoming injury with a perseverance he’ll describe as the commencement speaker for the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø’s 2017 graduating class. Melvin will speak in front of graduates, family and friends at Safeco Field. The ceremony begins at 4 p.m. June 13.
