Research opportunities for undergraduates

Dozens of 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell students were among the 1,200 students from all three 56³Ô¹ÏÍø campuses who presented posters at the May 19 Undergraduate Research Symposium in Mary Gates Hall in Seattle. Research at the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø provides a range of opportunities for students to perform high-level work as undergraduates.

First hackathon in series targets campus garden

The first in a planned series of 56³Ô¹ÏÍø community hackathons aims to make improvements at the garden sprouting on campus between the north parking garage and the sports fields. The Garden Innovation Challenge on April 21 is the work of the Hackathon Series Committee, a partnership of seven student clubs and organizations.

A team of 56³Ô¹ÏÍø students is competing in the national finals for the Imagine Cup, the prestigious Microsoft software contest. Computing software systems seniors Darong Leng, Miyu Kimura and Shen Li are creating an “ultra-reality space” that allows people from different locations to interact using multiple devices.

The first time Gautam Kumar submitted a cybersecurity paper to a conference, it “failed spectacularly." But with assistance from the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Writing and Communications Center, Kumar succeeded in having the paper accepted at a conference in Portugal where he presented his work.

There are about 320 trees on the upland portion of the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø campus above the wetlands. Students have started carefully measuring each one to create a database showing their utility to the ecosystem.

April 3 is the deadline to apply for the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Undergraduate Research and Creative Practice Symposium. Students present their research, scholarship or creative activity with a poster, oral presentation or visual and performance art.

Have idea? Need $100K? Innovation encouraged

Invention-minded students, faculty and staff at the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø are invited to apply for $100,000 Amazon Catalyst grants to help get the innovation started. The money comes from Seattle’s online retailer Amazon in partnership with CoMotion, the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø innovation hub. Applications are taken quarterly and the next deadline is March 26.

Student poster selected at math conference

A presentation of work from 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell’s summer Mathematics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) was selected as an outstanding poster at a major math conference. Another REU is being held this summer on campus, and there’s still time to apply.
