About
Dr. Gowri Shankar is a tenured faculty member in the 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB School of Business and has been serving as the Vice Chancellor for Planning & Administration (VCPA) for 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell since 2019. The VCPA oversees Institutional Planning & Budgeting (IPB), Fiscal & Audit Services (FAS), Organizational Excellence & Human Resources (OEHR), Campus Facilities & Services (FSCO), Physical Planning & Space Management (PPSM), 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB Information Technologies (IT), Campus Safety, and Commuter Services and Sustainability. Dr. Shankar serves on the 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB Chancellor’s Executive team and on several planning committees at the University level.
At Bothell, Dr. Shankar has taught courses in the area of finance, accounting, managerial economics and risk management & insurance at 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB. He also taught at SUNY-Oswego, Cornell University, Syracuse University and Bangalore University before coming to 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell in 2000. Prior to his academic career, he worked in multinational firms in India and in Nigeria.
Dr. Shankar has won several teaching awards including the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Distinguished Teaching Award in 2008 (the highest teaching award at 56³Ô¹ÏÍø, awarded annually to one member of the 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB faculty), the 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB School of Business Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2019, and the MBA Professor of the Year Award in 2002 and in 2003.
Dr. Shankar earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting and finance from Bangalore University and the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad, and a Ph.D. in Finance from Syracuse University. His scholarship has been published in the Financial Review, Economics Letters, Applied Financial Economics, Financial Services Review, Journal of Investing, Journal of Retirement, Business Horizons and other journals. His research focuses on the constitution and performance of stock market indexes, the evolution of stock trading over time, and retirement income modeling.
In 2018-19, Dr. Shankar served as the Chair of the 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB General Faculty Organization. Prior to that, he served as the Vice-Chair and lead an initiative to strengthen faculty governance with the creation of School by-laws and Elected Faculty Councils. He was selected by the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Provost to participate in the 2017-18 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Leadership Excellence Program and subsequently worked on a task force with colleagues from the College of Built Environments and the School of Law to develop and propose housing assistance programs for 56³Ô¹ÏÍø faculty. He has served on many campus councils including the Campus Council on Planning and Budgeting (CCPB), the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Faculty Council on Benefits and Retirement and others. From 2009 to 2013, he served as the Associate Director/Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the 56³Ô¹ÏÍøB School of Business.
