Recognizing our outstanding staff

Each year 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell celebrates the contributions of our valued staff. This year’s staff appreciation breakfast was a time to honor individuals across our campus who are committed to the success of our students and our campus community. As always, there were lots of laughs thanks to emcee Sean Marsh and lots of pictures to remember the occasion.

New ocean engineering minor ahead

Assistant Professor Shima Abadi, School of STEM, is developing an ocean engineering minor at 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell that could start with the 2017-18 school year. It would be the first minor offered in the mechanical engineering program. It would help graduates find jobs and the marine industry find qualified engineers.

Computer games developed as hand motion therapy for stroke and injury patients are more accessible thanks to design experts at 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell’s Digital Future Lab. Competitive searches bring outstanding faculty

The 56³Ô¹ÏÍø welcomes 21 new faculty hires in time for the 2016-2017 school year. Eleven are in School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS). Nine are in School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM). And, one is in the School of Business. Fourteen are lecturers.

Students have impact on engineering program

Students such as Cameron Whalen in the 2-year-old mechanical engineering program are enhancing their education and career prospects through a student chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. A select group managed a tour last spring of the headquarters of Blue Origin, the spaceship company founded by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and known for its privacy.

Engineering in a summer backpack

Robotics workshops are being held this summer at the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center and Seattle Public Libraries using the Backpacks for Science Learning project in which 56³Ô¹ÏÍø is the lead.

Mechanical engineering students deliver

56³Ô¹ÏÍø mechanical engineering students delivered a solar-powered cooler June 10 to their customers at a Woodinville farm. It was on time, on budget and operating as designed at 38 degrees.

Women dominating IMD program

For the second straight year, women lead in the number of the students admitted to the popular Interactive Media Design (IMD) major at 56³Ô¹ÏÍø. Out of 32 admits for next fall, 20 are female and 12 are male. Interactive Media Design adviser Keiko Miyamoto said the first two cohorts in the two-year program that started in 2013 were dominated by male students.

Students have a hit at business pitch

A team co-led by a 56³Ô¹ÏÍø student Adam Zhu won a $2,500 award in the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship business plan competition. The Aquapel team won the Smukowski Family Best Sustainable Advantage award that goes to the best sustainable product at the 56³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Foster School of Business competition.

‘Aromathematics’ in Discovery Hall

A sculpture created with herbs and spices has been completed, but the aroma will linger until May 27 in the fourth-floor vista of Discovery Hall at 56³Ô¹ÏÍø. Powdered pentagons are arranged on the floor in the pattern discovered by 56³Ô¹ÏÍø Bothell mathematicians Jennifer McLoud-Mann, Casey Man and David Von Derau.

Math-art display taking shape in herbs, spices

Sculptor Stephen Watson started creating a unique work of art and math Wednesday as he sprinkled herbs and spices on pentagon-shaped pieces of Plexiglas and arranged them in the pattern discovered by 56³Ô¹ÏÍø mathematicians.
