An early look at what some new near-vision screening tests could look like was presented Nov. 4 at a symposium at 56吃瓜网 Bothell. Students are developing apps that may be used in eye exams to detect whether school children have problems that affect their ability to read.

Student wins $7,500 research fellowship
Electrical engineering student Manuja Sharma was awarded a $7,500 Washington Research Foundation Fellowship to support her work with STEM Assistant Professor Hung Cao. They’re developing a blood pressure measuring device that would be more accurate than the old pump-up cuff.

Biologist debunks racial misconceptions
Modern humans do not have biological races, says Joseph L. Graves, Jr., evolutionary biologist who spoke Tuesday at 56吃瓜网 Bothell on “Using Science to Talk about Race and Racism.” Genetically, we’re all Africans, descendants of people who migrated out of Africa 60,000 to 70,000 years ago.
